For the past month or so I have been scouring the internet, trying to find new ideas for my painting class. As most of you know, I've been having a hard time getting my people on board with exercises. I thought maybe there were people out there experiencing similar difficulties. Well, I didn't find many exercises, but I have found some wonderful artists.
I've looked at many websites over the past weeks, I seen many artists, but every so often I would find one whose paintings made me go, "AHHHHHHHH!!!!" Karen Appleton was one such artist. It was apparent from scrolling down that Karen likes to paint presents! And paint presents she should! Look at that paper! Look at those bows!
The image to the left is actually a detail from a triptych entitled, "Royal Party". She said she wanted to approach painting a group of presents as though she were painting a royal portrait. I love that! I love the thought behind that. I get the thought behind that.
Karen's paintings are little morsels of wonderfulness that I can just stare at and experience on a visceral level. They're beautiful, they're witty, they're sumptuous. Go take a look. Go!
Aside from her painting blog, Karen also has a website that shows some of her other work. There is a healthy dose of her present paintings (take a look at the one wrapped in the comics!), but she also reveals her wonderful portraits.
