Not that I'm counting... but the Eldest Lamblet will be home in 5 more days... less than a week! We were up at the lake this past weekend so Grizzled sent a text message and left a voice mail message letting her know, you know, like in case she decided to call and check in. We hadn't heard from her in 6 days, which was a good thing, but was still a little unnerving. Anyhow, she knew where we were in case she had to get in touch.
She called on Saturday. I wasn't terribly surprised. I had figured she'd gotten the messages. Um... she hadn't. Apparently she'd been too busy having fun. Oh well, it's better than being so homesick that she couldn't see to dial through the tears.
She sounded goofy when I spoke with her, laughing and speaking a mile a minute, reeling off everything they had been doing... telling me that she had gotten me a nifty souvenir from a couple of places, did I want to know now, or wait?? I wanted to wait.
She told me of canoeing on Loch Ness, of the guest houses they stayed in in Pitlochry, Scotland. She said she thought of me when they were at the sheepdog farm... puppies running everywhere. She said it also reminded her of Babe (although she called it Peeg!), her favorite childhood movie... the only thing that would calm her down after a busy day of being a toddler.
She said she was having so much fun, that she felt as if she'd been gone for a month! She loved her roommates, had made so many new friends, and had seen and done some incredible stuff.
"Oh, by the way, I ate haggis... It was fine... but was too salty. I'd eat it again if it weren't so salty."
She went on and on and then came to... "Oh by the way, Mom... I have a slight problem, which is why I'm calling..." Oh, right, she hadn't checked her messages, so didn't know where we were going to be. She was trying to track us down because she had a PROBLEM! My mind raced. I thought of the handful of problems that would be phone call worthy and took a deep breath. I prepared to track a lost or stolen wallet... prepared to hear a health issue... I waited...
"Mom? Do you know a faster way to dry laundry? Our clothes won't dry!"
They were told before the trip that they would not have laundry facilities. All laundry, unless very lucky, would be done in the hotel sink. She went prepared... had her clothesline, a sink stopper, liquid detergent, etc. Clothes were chosen for their lightness and ability to dry fast... or so we thought.
I asked her if she still had things to wear, and if she did, put the wet clothes in the large Ziplocs we sent and rehang them at the next spot. She and her roommates had already done that... The clothes are still wet. They'd tried a blow dryer, hanging them in front of an open window (didn't help due to the rain), flapping them around the room, etc, etc, etc. There was no radiator to set them by, no fan. I was out of ideas.
"But Mom! You have an answer for everything!" No, I thought, that would be your father. :) But then I did have an answer. I told her that she'd be at her homestay in a matter of days and would hopefully have access to something better there. In the meantime, if she was really desperate and needed dry clothes, GO SHOPPING!!! She liked that answer.
I have no idea what she ended up doing, but I'll find out soon. In a mere 5 days, plus a couple of hours, our lamblet will be back. I'll even gladly do her laundry.
