FYI: My left foot is in this photo, but since this creature is so enormous, my foot doesn't even register!!!
My lawn is littered with these... you can't walk through it without hearing crunsh, crunsh, crunsh... the grass muffles the crunch ever so slightly.
Cicada time. They make a lot of racket, too.
Did you know there is a wasp called a cicada killer? They're very fearsome looking. But relatively friendly, at least for a wasp (as long as you're not a cicada).

Riding my bike one day in Iowa City I could hear one of those things from blocks away.
Advance warning did not prevent my face from meeting it.

thundra- ours have been making racket since early July, if not sooner. It was a little confusing as cicada noise is usually back-to-school noise.
Hmmm, don't know if I have seen that wasp. It's cool looking.
Substance- OUCH! I'm imagining that a fully hydrated cicada (unlike mine) would hurt when being pelted by it at bike speeds.
Riding in Iowa??? Were you doing RAGBRAI?

Here's a pic of one I took in July (down by the lake, of course).

Seriously, it's like thunder and I collaborated on a film, got BG to sing, and only had 50 bucks left for special effects.

"I Raised you a Monster" would be a good slogan for advertising Alraune.

I haven't eaten one of these in years... they're kinda like a giant celery-flavored M&M- a prodgious crunchy candy shell, and a "green" tasting interior.
They make a hell of a racket when you grab them- this stops when you bite their heads off.

Add a little honey and you have the John the Baptist buffet.
