I got an email from a beloved friend today... in the subject line?
Tuna Melt
Ok, it really said Tuna Nelt, but that's just because we like destroying the English language.
In the body?
By far one of the greatest sangritches ever. Yes, sangritches really means sandwiches.
I honestly don't think I've ever had a tuna melt and don't plan on having a tuna melt. Nothing sounds worse to me than hot tuna with melted cheese! I can do tuna casserole, but tuna melt? GACK! The mere thought of it sounds wrong. I imagine lukewarm tuna salad with a semi-congealed piece of oil-speckled cheese on it... maybe even a fly buzzing around. It just sounds nasty.
Has anyone had one? Does anyone else feel the tuna melt love my friend feels?
Now I do like a Patty Melt... however, I prefer to say "Pattry Nelt"... Actually, I even enjoy saying Patty Melt. It's good I like them because about 60% of the time, if I'm in a diner, I have to order the Patty Melt just so I can say it. I think my nostrils flair a little bit... perhaps even twitch a little, with one eyebrow raising ever so slightly. The saying of it is almost as satisfying as the sangritch itself.
But seriously... am I missing something with the Tuna Melt? I don't think so, but it's never too late to change and have one's eyes opened. Tuna Nelt isn't as much fun to say though...
ironically I love tuna melts but hate patty melts.

You must elaborate!! What is it about the tuna melt that you love?? And, why no love for his sister, Patty? Hmmmmmm???

Noooo. Tuna melts are nasty.
Nasty nasty nasty.
bleh.

Needs more peeps.
Actually this sounds like one of SmG's more outre recipes (as indeed does the previous post).

Tuna melts are the greatest sandwich ever invented. I rate with Kathleen on the patty melt too.
Posted by: fish | March 24, 2010 at 05:15 PM
Von- I haven't had one, but still have to agree.
hdb- no peep melts will be crossing these lips, but... I'm kind of tempted to make one, just for the gore factor.
Tuna melts are the greatest sandwich ever invented.
Cannibal!
And, what's not to like about a patty melt??
Posted by: Jennifer | March 24, 2010 at 05:33 PM
Tuna melts are delicious if done right. The tuna salad has to be nice and tangy and very thick. Adding some sliced hot green chiles and black pepper does the trick. Then smeared an eighth of an inch thick on a slice of storebought bread. Some old, sharp chedder on top, and then baked in an oven or toaster oven.
It's been a really long time since I've had this.
Posted by: Mandos | March 24, 2010 at 05:46 PM
I can totally see someone not liking it if done wrong though. Like making the tuna salad too runny and without enough seasonings (one essential, finely chopped onion), thereby making the bread soggy, or using processed cheese slices or something. I can imagine a terrible experience, and it would be a shame.
Posted by: Mandos | March 24, 2010 at 05:48 PM
nice fresh slice of tomato, too Mandos.
Posted by: zombie rotten mcdonald | March 24, 2010 at 05:49 PM
No... I can't do tomato with tuna. I love both, but not together. Something in them clashes and they taste like fish skin. Old fish skin. Eating a tomato with tuna literally makes me gag.
Mandos- I see a tuna melt in your future!
Posted by: Jennifer | March 24, 2010 at 05:51 PM
Also... could you use a pilgrim in place of a tomato?
Posted by: Jennifer | March 24, 2010 at 05:55 PM
Patty melts are my favorite, but I've had a tuna melt. The picture you painted was na-asty, but I swear the tuna melts I've had were not. I am pro-melt.
Posted by: Claire | March 24, 2010 at 06:05 PM
LL Cool J likes 'em.
Posted by: Substance McGravitas | March 24, 2010 at 06:13 PM
Check. Claire is pro-melt!
SMcG- the lyrics I found on the great gazoogle said this:
Uh, I'm in the mood for a tuna milk
I'm assuming they misunderstood...
Posted by: Jennifer | March 24, 2010 at 06:19 PM
He really meant Auto Tuna.

========================
Funny post, Jennifer. I'm reminded of my hate for sushi right up to the time I actually tried some.
Anywho, I get tuna salad on whole wheat toast with jack cheese and tomato at least two times a week. (Sometimes, this is mistakenly turned into a tuna melt, but I like it better with just the toast. Tuna melts are fine, though.)

Why do people want to melt a goddam tunafish!?!?! They don't exactly have lives of great joy and fulfillment and then someone wants to melt them!
And when it's runny and congealing on the floor, you look at it and say "Yeah, it's melted, heh heh we melted that baby alright, heh heh".
Give me a fish and cheese toasted sandwich anytime.
Posted by: Another Kiwi | March 24, 2010 at 07:43 PM
thunder- I'm still not convinced.
AK- I'm not touching any fish with cheese...
Posted by: Jennifer | March 24, 2010 at 08:54 PM
I'm not a big fan of tomato on a tuna melt, makes it a little soggier. Some tomato bits chopped into the tuna salad might be fine, though. Really when you bake it, the tuna salad itself should brown a bit.
I don't have any tuna or cheddar at the moment, and actually I haven't had one in years because I will only eat my mother's tuna salad, pretty much. I haven't fully reverse-engineered it yet, and am not bothering to.
Posted by: Mandos | March 24, 2010 at 09:09 PM
all this talk, I am gonna have a tuna melt RIGHT NOW.
with TOMATO.
NOM NOM NOM.
Posted by: zombie rotten mcdonald | March 24, 2010 at 09:40 PM
with TOMATO
Enjoy your tinny fish skin.

Did someone mention TMTO?

Too Mah Toe.
Can't go wrong.

By "tuna", Zombie means tuna branes.

The way we are fishing them to extinction, liquefaction is the least of their worries.

A HUGE thumbs down on the Tuna melt from me, Jen. I have always wondered why I despised this sandwich, and now I suspect it is familial. I love tuna and love cheese but together they make me sick.
Posted by: Karla | March 25, 2010 at 07:12 AM
Never had one, might attempt to make one later today. I'm a wild one!
Posted by: Dan Leo | March 25, 2010 at 09:44 AM
Mine was delicious.

hdb needs to get out more...
Dan- you're an animal!!! You're a Danimal!
ZRM- coming from a zombie... doesn't mean much.
I have tried NUMEROUS gustatory-related things suggested by this blogosphere. I have purchased rosemary Marcano almonds... heinous chocolate skittles... Chocolate Chex... I have purchased nearly EVERYTHING that Pinko has directed me too, some of which I'm sure I can't even remember, but there have been enough that the lamblets refer to the snack aisle as the Pinko Punko aisle... but... I don't think I can do the tuna melt, even though my bestest friend lahves them, and the majority of you weirdos like and/or lahve them. It just doesn't sound good... especially the tuna/tomato part. That combo has never worked on these tastebuds.
Posted by: Jennifer | March 25, 2010 at 10:52 AM
there aren't any spiders in a tuna melt.
Posted by: zombie rotten mcdonald | March 25, 2010 at 11:24 AM
I've looked at recipes... and although there are no spiders, there is often, mayo. Warm mayo. YUCK!
And... then we get back to what my sister said... tuna and cheese. Not going to happen.
Posted by: Jennifer | March 25, 2010 at 11:35 AM
Eat cheese or Die.

LOL! No... these words were misspelled on purpose.
Posted by: Jennifer | March 25, 2010 at 01:22 PM
Not just warm mayo, but mayo baked long enough to brown and form a skin.
I guess I shouldn't tell you about the anchovy pita melt. That one I *do* have with tomatoes. But no mayo, though.
Posted by: Mandos | March 25, 2010 at 03:04 PM
Not just warm mayo, but mayo baked long enough to brown and form a skin.
Oh... yeah... that's what I want... mayo with a SKIN!! What is wrong with you people!?!
Posted by: Jennifer | March 25, 2010 at 03:06 PM
ZOMBIE!! I mean, what do you think?
Posted by: zombie rotten mcdonald | March 25, 2010 at 03:45 PM
It's not a lot different from hot cream cheese and artichoke and crab dip they serve as appetizers in certain fine establishments.

It's different...
ZRM- are you talking to yourself? And... one more thing... and not that you would know, cuz you can't look at fish's comments anymore or at many of his old posts, but yesterday was the anniversary of the first Zardoz. It started with the "What's he building down there!"
Posted by: Jennifer | March 25, 2010 at 04:42 PM
You have kept a schedule of Zardozes?
Posted by: Mandos | March 25, 2010 at 05:18 PM
You have kept a schedule of Zardozes?
LOL! No, I didn't, but a video that fish linked to on another post reminded me that it was the same video that launched ZRM and I off onto trashing his place. The subject of Zardoz had come up in an earlier thread, but was continuing... the trashing then became linked with Zardoz. I knew it was in March and happened to have an email that corroborated what I thought I remembered.
I also have a pretty good memory for dates/time of the year.
Posted by: Jennifer | March 25, 2010 at 05:23 PM
linkie, Miss Jennifer?
yes, I talk to myself.
Do you ever repeat the things you say to yourself?
Like hey this is a pretty nice chair
I really like this chair
I think I'll sit in this chair
Don't let it worry you, it happens to me all the time
you know it happens to me every day
sure it happens to me
I talk to myself
But I don't listen to what I say
I get along pretty well
although I'm with me every day
do you ever disagree with things you say to yourself
like hey, I think I'll have another drink
no I don't need another
but then you get one anyway?
Don't let it worry you, it happens to me all the time
no it don't, don't listen to me
sure it happens to me every day
I talk to myself
But I don't listen to what I say
I get along pretty well
although I'm with me every day
(why does it take so long?) I'm just getting ready
(why are you always wrong?) thought I was getting better
I'm just a regular guy
I try to be a little hip
but I'm just getting by.
I talk to myself
But I don't listen to what I say
I get along pretty well
although I'm with me every day
Do you ever forget what you were talking about?
like when you talk about the Zardoz then you think about trout.
It could happen to me, though I've got my doubts....
You know I really like jelly beans. They're not tuna flavored though. Tuna flavored jelly beans would be unpopular, I think.
Green. I should paint it green.
I talk to myself
But I don't listen to what I say
I get along pretty well
although I'm with me every day
Posted by: zombie rotten mcdonald | March 25, 2010 at 05:37 PM
ZRM has gotten into Kathleen's liquor cabinet. :)
Tuna flavored jelly beans. Ugh! I suppose you'd need a cheese and mayo variety as well. No tomato. :)
Posted by: Jennifer | March 25, 2010 at 05:42 PM
yesterday was the anniversary of the first Zardoz
wow -really? anyone else feel like we've been Zardozing for years and years?
Posted by: Kathleen | March 26, 2010 at 12:26 AM
A belated vote in favor of the tuna melt. I think I like it because it's tuna, so I can tell myself I'm eating something healthy, but it's still got lots of cheese. I do like patty melts somewhat better, though, especially if they slather on lots of onions.
Posted by: Andy | March 28, 2010 at 03:19 PM
I once had a tuna melt made on raisin bread. That sounds horrible, but actually, it was really, really good.
Actually, I think almost any grilled sandwich is going to be good. Fat, cheese, heat - what's not to like?
Posted by: g | March 28, 2010 at 09:43 PM
Raisin bread?? AHHHH!!! While I can appreciate what raisins bring to turkey stuffing... in conjunction with sausage... I really can't think of raisins/tuna/cheese without feeling a little queasy. I'm willing to try most anything, but don't think I could even give that one a try.
BUT... I'm with you onthe theory that fat/cheese/heat=good. :)
Andy- yes, lots of onions.
