When life gives you snow in April...

Snowbunny ...make snow bunnies.

Okay, I've had a little chat with the snow and we have mended our rift. It's overstayed its welcome, but I still love it and it has promised (again) that it won't stay for long.

I snarled at it, I rolled my eyes, but eventually, it had me outside frolicking in it. It's excellent packing snow after all. Who could resist.

... and I'm not certain, but I believe I heard the crazy strains of Lou Reed come wafting through the air.

Gack...

AprilsnowUpdated below:

This is what I woke up to this morning. It shows no signs of slowing down at least for today. I had taken out a restraining order on snow. It was not supposed to come within 3 states of me until November. Apparently snow answers to no one.

April showers bring May flowers... I'm not sure what April snows bring... maybe woes or mental lows...

We have confirmation of April snows bringing woes. I dropped Grizzled off at the train station at 7:10 this morning. 1 hour and 50 minutes later he is on a train that is moving and all live power lines that were previously on the track have been removed.

Everyone talks about the weather, but...

... no one does anything about it or so they say. I was just discussing the weather with various people. One reason is we're having weather that is a little more intense than usual, another reason is, we all have weather in common and sometimes you just don't feel like digging for interesting tidbits of conversation.

So... on with the weather! It's still cold, but we, unlike many other areas, did not luck out on a second day of no school. The call came in dark and early that school would be in session and that only people who don't know how to dress were calling it off. We know how to dress. We may not like all of winter wear, but we've learned. My kids are still learning. I had to mention hats a few times this morning... I gave the old, "You lose the most heat out of your head!" talk. My kids have lots of hair and weren't buying it. I got them with the story about my grandfather and his black, molting earlobes. Hats were put on, gloves were put on, a long list of "most likely to be frostbitten" body parts was given. Maybe next time I won't need to use gore to convince them to dress appropriately.

Today, we also have snow... lots and lots of snow. It is coming down at a rapid pace which amazes me since it's about 3 outside. I seem to recall the old notion that really cold air does not contain a lot of moisture and therefore if you get really cold weather, it won't snow, or won't snow a lot. It's snowing A LOT and the snow is plenty wet and slippery. It's gorgeous though. It's covering up a multitude of my dog's frozen sins that he (okay, I) left out front. It's hard to keep up after a dog when it's that cold. Things freeze, things stick... fast...

Well, I seem to be segueing out of the weather category into just plain gory. I think I'll stop here.

If you're in a cold area, stay warm. If you're in a warm area, stay cool. It is what it is.

Next best thing to a snow day...

My girls have never gotten a snow day. Living where we do, they are usually pretty prepared for snow, lots of snow. It's harder to fight the cold though and this morning it is 9 below with a wind chill that is nearing 30 below.

We get a COLD DAY!!! There is no school! Unfortunately there probably won't be a lot of playing outside either, but I can think of worse things happening on a Monday than not having to go to school and not being able to go outside.

I suspect they really closed school as a day of mourning for the Bears...

Velcro Nose

It's 2 degrees here this morning... needless to say, it's cold out. It's brrrr-ass cold out. It's winter and I live in an area that gets winter (or should get winter), but we are having a true arctic blast and, did I say??? It's cold out!

There are clues... you can see clues even before stepping outside. You feel coolness emanating from the outside walls. You notice the constant hum of the furnace. There is not much of an on-off cycle during cold like this. You notice it when you look outside and see that all of the steam/smoke coming from chimneys and smoke stacks is horizontal. It is not coming out vertically or diagonally, but the minute it hits that heavy layer of cold air, it takes a direct horizontal path.

And then you go outside... The first thing you notice is something I like to call Velcro Nose. Being a living being, you breathe. You walk out, inhale as you always do, and notice that your nasal hairs have now bonded like Velcro. You force them apart which then brings tears to your eyes, only to repeat the above procedure over and over again.

You notice the dogs doing the lizard dance, lifting up alternate front and back paws. You notice the sound of the snow. It no longer sounds like snow, but sounds like you are walking through a field of Sanka. There is little to no moisture left in this snow. It's hard. and you know if you fell and it touched bare skin, it would hurt.

And if all of that doesn't let you know it's cold, you get the wind which instantly drops the temperature another 10-20 degrees. Wind must be like water, following the path of least resistance and able to get through the smallest opening. I was just out at the bus stop and was dressed appropriately. There is no room for vanity when the temp drops to single or below digits. Yes, I was dressed appropriately and yet the wind found its way to places no wind should be allowed to go.

Yes, it's quite cold out and I am just happy I don't need to be out in it today if I don't want to be. Standing at the bus stop for all of 5 minutes was enough to bring on an ice cream headache.
